Mannington Township

Originally named East Fenwick, Mannington is derived from the Indian word Maneto. Mannington Township, New Jersey is a mere 40 square mile area bounded by Upper Penn's Neck (Penns Grove) and Pilesgrove in the North, Salem NJ in the South, South and East by Upper Alloways Creek, and West by Lower Penn's Neck (Penns Grove).

In Mannington, you will find a fruit nursery with over 20,000 fruit trees of every variety, belonging to Samuel Reeve, Esq. In the central part of the township, Mannington Hill has only 6 or 8 dwellings.

One night during the American Revolution, a small party of the enemy broke into a house occupied by a Mr. Ambler of Mannington and threatened to murder the old gentleman, his wife and their two girls. The family was spared although they were robbed of their valuables. This dwelling has been rebuilt, and is now occupied by Mr. Joseph Shepard.
